JOB DESCRIPTION

Can you tailor the communication of complex ideas to different audiences? Are you a collaborative leader with strong organisational skills?

As part of the Science Museum Group (SMG), the National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) in Bradford is here to inspire futures. Our Exhibitions teams play a key role in this key priority. To support this work, we are now looking for an Interpretation Manager to be responsible for interpretation and content development across the museum, primarily in temporary exhibitions. In this role, you will champion the importance of effective interpretation and how it can transform engagement and understanding in our audiences. Driving excellent internal communication and multi-disciplinary working, you will collaborate with a small team of Interpretation Developers, and together, you will be involved in the research, design, digital, text and interactive elements across several projects.  You will lead the creative force in the Exhibitions and Interpretation team pushing to ensure our audience are at the heart of what we do and that we deliver high-quality, world-class content. You will work with designers, artists and internal teams to shape how research is communicated to our visitors, ensuring that our exhibitions and displays exceed expectations.

Joining us, you will be able to draw on your negotiation skills and creative solutions-focussed approach to assist in the collaborative nature of this role.  Being able to bring our collections to life is essential in this role, so you will be able to communicate complex or big ideas in an engaging way, telling a great story whilst tailoring the approach to different audiences. You will be organised and efficient, capable of managing multiple streams of work with varying deadlines, as well as managing relationships to ensure expectations are met and managed. You will bring experience of managing a high performing team in a fast-paced environment, switching between subjects, projects and management styles seamlessly.

The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group.  We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
