NTS – Mackintosh Illuminated Project – Activity Plan Development
The National Trust for Scotland seeks a consultant to coordinate the production of an Activity Plan for the Mackintosh Illuminated Project, ready for submission to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Consultant will incorporate all current research and consultation being delivered in the Development Phase of the project to inform the shape and content of the AP including:
conservation and buildings work development in the Project Execution Plan, audience development analysis, the evolving interpretation strategy, schools/tertiary consultation
outputs, digital programme development and community engagement consultation outputs. This contract is for consultancy support to help the Trust’s Community Engagement & Participation (CEP) on this project.
NTS seeks to appoint an experienced consultant to coordinate the writing of an Activity Plan with the project and property teams that fully complies with current NLHF guidance and
meets the projects aspirations. We are looking for a consultant with significant experience of working within large scale capital works and public engagement projects in complex organisations.
The Activity Plan will need to meet the three core Mackintosh Illuminated aims:
1. Transform public understanding and elevate the legacy of Mackintosh and Macdonald.
2. Grow engagement through The Hill House, Mackintosh Tearooms and online content.
3. Save The Hill House, delivering world class, research-led heritage conservation which secures its future and contributes to learning on sustainable routes to preservation of 20th century architecture.
The consultant will join the Mackintosh Illuminated project team for the current Development Phase of the project to undertake the following:
– Establish relationships with key staff, including project and property teams, and undertake desk-based research on current research and reports. Establish/attend
regular meetings, set up feedback processes, and confirm timetable for delivery. Take part in regular update meetings with the NTS lead.
– Work with staff across the key areas of the project and learn about ongoing activity to identify opportunities and develop activity plans based on current consultation, business as usual delivery, and ongoing project development work, including:
o Conservation and buildings team based at The Hill House
o Current visitor, engagement, skills, career and learning colleagues based in our National teams, at Mackintosh Tearooms and The Hill House
o MI project delivery team
o Digital development to incorporate digital interpretation and activity
o Architect and design team
o Skills and careers team
o Consultants working on interpretation strategy, audience development, evaluation frameworks, schools’ consultation, community consultation, business plan and digital audience development.
– Ensure integration between the conservation/capital programme of works and Activity Plan, including how the physical changes to The Hill House and the ground breaking conservation techniques being used, allow for the delivery of activities and how activities can link with this work as a means to learn about heritage.
– Produce an ‘Interim Activity Plan’ and a final ‘Mackintosh Illuminated Activity Plan’ that meets NLHF requirements and Investment Principles, which are to be submitted with our Delivery Phase bid.
KEY DELIVERABLES:
Develop plan to review and integrate all consultation and project work to date and all remaining consultation review to be delivered, which will assist in informing the Activity Plan.
Completed Interim Activity Plan for NLHF review before final document submission (August 2026). This will require internal review prior to NLHF submission (likely early August).
