Professional Recognition for Interpreters

AHI recognises and promotes the value and professionalism of interpreters and heritage interpretation.

We are committed to high standards in interpretation and to helping individuals and organisations develop their professional practice.

AHI provides two key career path milestones for interpreters: Accreditation and Fellowship. These recognise that interpreters from many backgrounds, working in diverse roles and organisations, are united by their passion for heritage interpretation, their professionalism, and their core skills and knowledge.

Accreditation

Accreditation celebrates AHI members who are recognised by their peers for their professionalism and high ethical standards.

To achieve accreditation status, applicants need to submit evidence to demonstrate professional experience in three core competencies:

  • Interpretation Planning
  • Interpretation Project Delivery
  • Evaluating Interpretation.

Fellowship

Fellowship celebrates accredited (or previously ‘MAHI’) members who are recognised by their peers as having made an exceptional contribution to the development of interpretation. Fellows are champions for our profession and role models and mentors for the next generation.

To achieve Fellowship status, applicants need to complete a detailed application form and submit five pieces of evidence that demonstrate outstanding achievement in three out of four key areas:

  • Contribution to the development of good practice in interpretation
  • Participation in the wider profession through teaching, training or actively supporting AHI (or a similar heritage organisation)
  • Attainment of relevant academic, professional, vocational qualifications or equivalent learning through sustained reflective practice
  • Publication of influential resources on interpretation theory and/or practice (in any medium).

Code of Ethics

Our Code of Ethics outlines the values and principles that guide good interpretive practice. It reflects our commitment to integrity, inclusivity, honesty and responsible stewardship across all work in the sector. Members agree to uphold these principles as part of their professional conduct.
