“One of the underlying purposes of good interpretation is actually to encourage people to slow down a little bit.”

David Masters

David Masters, a fellow of AHI, began working in interpretation when he joined the Centre for Environmental Interpretation, based at Manchester Metropolitan University, in 1991. CEI was an important organisation in the history of interpretation development in the UK, and a strong supporter in the early years of SIBH. David later moved into freelance work before joining Imagemakers in 2002, where he has worked ever since. Here he discusses the importance of interpretation ethics and his career highlights, including projects in Uganda and China, writing HLF guidelines, and acting as a judge for the AHI awards.

These interviews were recorded in 2025, our 50th anniversary year, with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The full interviews are available to researchers on request. Contact us for more information.
