CHRIST CHURCH
ST LEONARDS ON SEA
Based at: Christ Church, St Leonards on Sea. Mostly home-working, with some days on-site.
Contract Length: The minimum duration will be from April 2023 to end March 2024. The role will require approximately 16 hours per week.
Salary: £12,500 p.a.
Responsible to: Christ Church’s National Lottery Heritage Fund Project Steering Group
Background:
Christ Church is a Grade 2* listed, significant architectural asset in St Leonards, being known for its Victorian Gothic architectural style and for our spire’s importance as a landmark in the town. The existing church was built in 1875 to designs by Sir Arthur Blomfield. It is impressive in scale and possesses a magnificent interior and the external walls of the church also include fine details.
We received a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund that will allow us to undertake urgent refurbishment of the outside of the church. An exciting part of the project will be the accompanying project which will involve the whole community of St Leonards in a fun and educational series of events, activities and other interpretation materials based on the history of the church and the wider town.
We’ve already created a heritage interpretation plan and we are looking for someone to take the lead on the project to ensure that it is developed and delivered to a high standard. This is a new venture for Christ Church, so we need your expertise to help us make our plans into a successful programme.
Key Responsibilities:
The Heritage Engagement and Education Officer will have overall management responsibility for developing and delivering the four strands of Christ Church’s Heritage Engagement and Education Plan.
Specifically:
- Further develop the detailed heritage engagement strategy and Activity Plan, based on consultation, feedback and evidence from a wide range of community sources, for delivery of the NLHF project.
- Work with the static interpretation designers to deliver temporary and permanent fixed interpretation boards.
- Work with the Heritage Guide Training Specialist/event planner to ensure that the heritage events are planned, and volunteer greeter/guides are trained
- Develop and implement a series of Community co-curated projects and education activities, to include activities with the Parish primary school and other community groups
- Provide the Project Board with regular progress reports
- Meet deadlines for the Activities Plan
- Publicise the activities
- Make maximum use of new technology and social media to position heritage at the centre of the project.
Person Specification:
- A background in heritage and sufficient historical and local knowledge to interpret the story
- Experience in delivering similar projects, ie developing and delivering heritage related interpretation/activities, training and supporting volunteers
- Five Grade C or above GCSEs, including English and Maths
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Marketing experience in market research or promotion
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience of working with volunteers
- Proven ability to work independently
- Experience of working towards targets and delivering against them
