Writing interpretation for children and families
Inspire, excite, amuse and amaze!
From Harry Potter to Peppa Pig, The Grinch to The Gruffalo, the appeal of popular fiction spans the generations.
In this webinar, we’ll consider what heritage interpreters can learn from fiction writers. We’ll explore copywriting techniques that enable heritage sites and museums to reach out to visitors of all ages, such as:
- How to ‘hook’ a child’s interest, no matter how small the budget or how ‘dry’ the subject.
- Writing text that children and adults want to read
- Tips for targeting different age ranges
- Ways to encourage inter‑generational conversations
Biography
For many years, Cathy was a freelance copywriter and interpretation consultant, specialising in writing for families and children. Her experience ranges from printed media to audio, apps and multi-media trails. She has run workshops for many national organisations including the National Trust, English Heritage, The RNLI, The Wildlife Trusts and the Association for Heritage Interpretation.
Cathy currently works as Marketing & Digital Officer for Wessex Museums – a partnership of four museums in Dorset and Wiltshire. This role is largely creating content for the website, virtual exhibitions, social media and e-newsletters. But in her spare time she is still working in the field of children’s writing. She runs writing workshops for adults and schools, and mentors aspiring authors.
She has just revised and republished her children’s guide to Corfe Castle – once the best-selling family guide within the National Trust. She is also excited to be working on a new children’s non-fiction book – but the subject is top secret!
