Writing for Children Workshop

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

Inspire, excite, amuse and amaze!

From the Hobbit to Harry Potter, the Grinch to the Gruffalo, the appeal of popular fiction spans the generations.

In this one-day workshop, we’ll consider what heritage interpreters can learn from fiction writers. We’ll explore copywriting techniques that enable heritage sites and museums to reach out to visitors of all ages, such as:

  • How to ‘hook’ a child’s interest, no matter how small the budget or how ‘dry’ the subject
  • Writing text that children and adults want to read
  • Tips for targeting different age ranges
  • Encouraging inter generational conversations, being inclusive and dealing with sensitive subjects

There will be lots of writing exercises and opportunities for participants to share ideas and discuss their own writing projects and of course, to have fun!

If you attended Cathy's webinar in November 2022, the content will be similar but with more time to dwell and discuss, share ideas and ask questions. And also time for participants to try writing exercises. Cathy will also cover a bit more about diverse audiences and writing about sensitive subjects.

For many years, Cathy was a freelance copywriter and interpretation consultant, specialising in writing for families and children. Her experience ranges from printed media to audio, apps and multi-media trails. She has run workshops for many national organisations including the National Trust, English Heritage, The RNLI, The Wildlife Trusts and the Association for Heritage Interpretation.

Cathy has just taken on a new role as Senior Marketing & Communications Officer for the National Trust. Her role is to promote all the amazing work the Trust is doing in nature recovery in Purbeck, Dorset. She has recently republished her children’s guide to Corfe Castle – one of the best-selling family guides within the National Trust. She also runs writing workshops for adults and schools, and mentors aspiring authors.
